Sonic 06 actually has some interesting information in the data in the game, if you hack the game you can find a Rainbow Gem, description of the Gem in the demo is "Allows you to perform "super".

if you use this gem in game sonic will do the super sonic animation without transforming, originally you would be able to use it and transform whenever you want, but it was scrapped.
